What Does a Denture Appointment Include
Getting dentures at Cariboo Choice Dental is a carefully managed process that involves several appointments to ensure the finished appliance fits accurately, functions effectively, and looks completely natural. Here's what to expect:
Initial Consultation and Assessment
The process begins with a thorough examination of your mouth, including an assessment of any remaining teeth, the condition of the gum tissue and underlying bone, and your overall oral health. X-rays may be taken to assess bone levels and the status of any remaining teeth. Our dentist will discuss your options, explain the process in detail, and address any questions or concerns you have before we begin.
Extractions (If Required)
If any remaining teeth need to be extracted prior to denture placement, this is completed and the necessary healing time is allowed before impressions are taken for a conventional denture. For patients opting for immediate dentures, the fabrication process begins before extractions are performed.
Preliminary Impressions
Initial impressions of your mouth are taken to create study models, a three-dimensional representation of your mouth that allows our team and the dental laboratory to begin planning your denture.
Custom Trays and Final Impressions
Custom impression trays are made from your study models and used to take more precise final impressions of your gum tissue and any remaining teeth. These detailed impressions form the basis for the fabrication of your denture.
Bite Registration
We record the relationship between your upper and lower jaws — including the vertical dimension of your bite and the way your jaws come together — to ensure the denture is made to the correct height and position for a comfortable, functional bite.
Tooth Selection
You'll be involved in selecting the shape, size, and shade of the artificial teeth for your denture. Our team will guide you through the options and help you choose teeth that complement your facial features and achieve the most natural-looking result.
Try-In Appointment
A wax trial denture, with the selected teeth set in a wax base, is fabricated and tried in your mouth before the final denture is made. This appointment allows both you and our dentist to assess the fit, the appearance, the bite, and the aesthetics of the planned denture before it is processed into its final form. Any changes can be made at this stage before final fabrication.
Fitting and Delivery
Once the final denture has been fabricated and processed, you'll return for your fitting appointment. The denture is carefully adjusted for fit and comfort, and our team will walk you through how to insert and remove it, how to care for it, what to expect during the adjustment period, and when to return for follow-up adjustments.
Denture Relining and Replacement
Even the best-fitting denture will eventually require relining or replacement.
